About Us
Public conversations today often move quickly. Issues can become simplified, positions can harden, and people often end up speaking within familiar circles rather than across them.
Everyone has a view. Few have a place to test it.
The challenge is not generating more opinions; Singaporeans already have opinions. The challenge is bringing them into conversation and creating a space for them to be articulated and heard. We welcome the messiness of opinion, but not the carelessness of bad arguments.
Pasar Malam exists to bring people together around the conversations that matter. Just as a pasar malam brings together different stalls in one place, we hope to create a space where different views can sit side by side, and where variance is not treated as a barrier to dialogue, but the beginning of it.
Founder's Note
There is no shortage of political conversation today. What is increasingly rare, however, is the space for thoughtful disagreement. Too often, public discourse is driven by outrage, polarisation, and provocation – leaving little room for nuance, careful reasoning, or genuine persuasion.
Politics is ultimately about the choices we make as a society – how we govern ourselves, what we value, and how we persuade others that our vision is the right one. If we want better outcomes for Singapore, these conversations must be grounded in thoughtful analysis, honest debate, and practical solutions rather than mere slogans and sound bites.
It is in that spirit that Pasar Malam was conceived. It is a space for opinion, commentary, and analysis where ideas are challenged on their merits, and disagreement is welcomed without hostility. My hope is to build a community that uses debate not to score points, but to sharpen ideas, and encourage better policymaking.
If this platform succeeds, it will be because it attracts people who care more about improving Singapore than winning arguments. Everyone is welcome to contribute; we ask only that we approach one another with curiosity, generosity, and respect.
